What is the longest time to be able to reasonably keep a cleaned crab refrigerated before cooking?  I see my local source is still selling them 5 days after they have been cleaned.

Why not just cook them and then keep em?
I've many times eaten crabs (whole, not pre-cleaned) that were steamed 5 days prior and kept refrigerated, with no ill effect.

I kept cleaned crabs overnight on ice in a cooler and cooked the next day.
Many were mushy. Same happened when held in a refrigerator.
Whenever I clean crabs now,  I cook within a couple hours and they are fine.
If I intend to use cleaned crabs in a recipe for the following day, I will keep the crabs alive overnight and clean them just before cooking.

I would find another local source or ask when the shipment arrived and purchase when fresh.

You gave sound advice to anyone like myself that cleans crab before steaming them.I too found that they become mushy if kept too long, I like your idea of steaming them ASAP and not keep them too long, two hours is what I go by. If I want to have fresh crab like tomorrow I keep them alive and kill them right before I steam them, Good advice friend ! thumbsup thumbsup

GEEZER:

If I were you I would look for fresher crab then crab that has been kept for 5 days I would think IMHO that it is pushing it to the limit  I don't care if those crabs were on ice for 5 days or not I would not buy them, buy fresh not something that has been laying around for almost a week YUCK YUCK !Mushy crab for sure. Tongue Tongue
