All,

I have two of the plastic blaze orange baskets that I use for crabbing.  I had heard that they are more than a bushel in size therefore if it's full, then I'd be over my one man limit.  Does anyone know if there's any truth to that?  Thanks.

I was always told they were larger than a US bushel too...  I guess the way to tell for sure is to line one with a large plastic bag, then see if it holds more then 9.3 gallons of water.  If it does, it's more than a bushel.

Should be easy enough to find the 1.0 bushel level using the water method as suggested, then make a line at that point on the basket with permanent marker, tape, or paint.

Just remember - a bushel is 9.3 liquid gallons BUT ONLY 8 gallons of dry goods.  http://www.convert-me.com/en/convert/volume/bushel.html

They are bigger.   Use the plastic as your culling basket and wood for your keepers...

Thanks guys.  Yeah I might just get some wooden baskets and cull using the plastic baskets.  They really are nice and sturdy though.  I just didn't want to run into a Crab Cop on a bad day and question my plastic basket.

Mine have a line in them that shows true bushel.  I rarely use them though.  Crabs seem to climb out easier.

They are better for culling.  Just get 1 or 2 regular bushels and cull the orange basket into them.  Not expensive maybe $2 a piece.  Easiest way to go and no worriess

yes but don't you normally have someone with you when crabbing ?,  you are allowed a bushel per person per day,  so fill that orange basket up!      course if you only have 2 people,  you cant fill them both


It is illegal to harvest or possess more than one bushel of crabs per day per person or offer for sale any crabs without having in your possession a valid commercial crabbing license.

Oh yes.  Always have my "Pincher Princess" along so yeah that was going to be my plan.  Definitely wouldn't be over two bushels but I wanted to make sure, in case, ya know we had a banner day and needed to confirm it was under two bushels!

Fill the plastic basket up to where the holes stop.  You'll be real close to a bushel at that point.
