ROUND BASKET- How to measure EXACT size- Bushel or not
«
on:

Here's how to calculate a bushel size. This is for ROUND only. USES CYLINDER VOLUME
MEASURE
1- Inches across
TOP
2- Inches across B
OTTOM
3- Inches
HEIGHT
CALCULATE
(TOP + BOTTOM) /2 =
AVG DIA /2 ---
AVG RADIUS
(AVG RADIUS
* AVG RADIUS * 3.14 *
HEIGHT
=
Total Cubic Inches
There are 2150.42 cubic inches per bushel
----SO .... Total Cubic Inches / 2150.42 = Your basket capacity in Bushels
Example- basket 18 inches high, bottom diameter is 14 inches & average diameter is 16 inches
(18+14)/2= 8 inches (Average radius).... Average radius is 8 inches
8 * 8 *3.14 * 30 inch (Height)= 6029 cubic inch capacity
6029 cubic inches / 2150.42 -----> Example Basket is only 2.8 bushels

bushel formula = Pi x average diameter squared divided by four times the height
22 divided by 7 times 17 times 17 divided by 4 times 30 equals 6802 cubic inches
6802 cubic inches divided by 2150 cubic inches per bushel equals 3.16 bushels

That's nice to know, but here is the important question (to me, at least.) Are Fish and Wildlife officers going to use that formula to calculate whether or not you have exceeded a bushel of crabs, or will they use a more arbitrary method?

1601 cubic inches / 2150.42 -----> Example Basket is only .7448 bushels OR ABOUT 3/4 BUSHEL >

Using Capt Frank's original example (which he has since changed) from Samiams quote above:
The correct formula would be for the volume of a truncated cone:
Cubic Volume
V = π × h × (R²+r²+R×r) ⁄ 3
V= 3.14 x 30 x (100 + 49 + 70) / 3
V= 6876.6 cu. in.
V=6876.6 / 2150 = 3.19 bushels
I agree with Samiam - fish cops aren't mathematicians! They're going to pull out a good old wooden bushel basket.

I don't think that the DNR officer will be that into equations.

I agree they will not do a calculation. But it could explain why you think the basket is 2 or 3 bushels when full.
Unless you have some factory volume marking on it, they will simply guess bigger or smaller.

Another great way to measure a bushel is to use this wooden thing called a bushel basket. When it's full, you have a bushel. Say you have 4 bushel baskets full. You have 4 bushels.

Remember what Seaweed said, and unless you're inbred, you also have 20 fingers and toes in case you need to count the number of bushel baskets....

The way to determine that is to try to remember whether your parents were still siblings after the divorce...

That's funny Jason. Look at you own site Avitar picture. What's that orange plastic this this in your picture filled with crabs? LMAO
Many do not use wood baskets and use plastic or coolers for the crabs.
Survey members.... BET MOST do NOT use wooden Baskets on their boats. Bets?

I use both. I use the plastic "laundry" basket for dumping the crabs in right from the trap to be culled. The wooden bushel basket is then filled with the keepers. If the wooden bushel gets filled (always the plan), then I'll dump the crabs into my plastic bushel and break out the backup plastic bushel. Makes sense to me.

Nothing wrong with that. An over flow basket.
The plastic ones usually have the volume stamped on the bottom. Like 1.5 BU Or 2.0BU.
The plastic lasts forever. The wooden ones degrade over time. You will remember the first ( at probably last ) time you lift a full bushel and the wire handle breaks off dumping the crabs. LMAO
Also five gallon buckets. A couple of 5 gallon buckets is slightly over a bushel. 1 Bushel =9.3 gallons
