Recently purchased a documented boat. My question is what is the advantage of having the boat documented? I thought the big advantage was that you didn't have to pay sales tax to the state. Was that true in the past? Maryland now requires tax to be payed  on the purchase of a documented vessel.

Thanks

IIRC Maryland has required sales tax on documented boats for a long time. Some just didn't pay it.

If you use the boat for commercial fishing and is documented, you don't need a Maryland registration sticker. Also repair materials are tax exempt thru your TFL.
