How long are crabs good to eat after they expire. If you start crabbing at 6am and a few are dead at 1pm when you cook them, are they still good?

Most will tell you not to chance it. If they ain't alive when you put them in the pot, they go into the trash can. Why take a chance on getting sick.

[Sam Hill], we give it to all of our patients at work every night. It keeps them from falling out of bed.

A source tells me that they are still good for 3 hours after they die.The only way you would know is if you catch them yourself.

Like any seafood it goes bad quick. If you keep the crabs cold they are fine if you caught them a few hours ago. If you didnt then if they are close to the top of the bushel basket i will toss it in the steamer. Everyone knows if they open up a crab that smells funny or the meat is mushey not to eat it. Even if i know all the crabs are alive and i find one mushey or smells funny its not getting eaten. But if I cant really tell how long it has been dead i toss it or use it for bait next time i go fishing.

Good response. A while back, early May, I went to a Asian market. I saw crabs already backed, cleaned up,  and sitting in a refrigerated area for sale. Have to wonder when and how long they were there. Personally, I won't take a chance on eating a crab like that. .

You have to watch them Asians, they try to be slick and pick up a string of crabs and put hem in the bag, sometimes a dead one is latched on to live ones.I make them show me each one as it is bagged.
