I have been walking the salt marshes for 30 plus years in this area and have never seen such a shortage of crabs.  Either something has changed or numbers have decreased.  Any thoughts?

Hi Gelite-

I part time commercial crab and I have not seen a decrease in crabs this year. I did have one pretty bad outing about a month ago but that was just for that week. At high tide or as its coming in I see plenty of crabs of all sizes on the oyster bars. Could it be maybe in your certain area? Building and run off ? Not sure just throwing ideas.

The area I am speaking about is the marshes between Cedar Snag and Greens Channel.  Been walking them for years.  The past three trips yielded only two keeper crabs.  I would normally get at least a dozen per trip.  Going to try again next week..  Usually wait for the beginning of incoming tide.  Thanks for the response Saxon.

You are welcome and I am by  no means any expert on crabs or anything else. I always play in the water when I am down east in Topsail sound and headed back this afternoon. Not going to set but a few pots out but will report on this site Sunday evening or Monday sometime.
