Hi, The world is full of comedians my friend. I use a BIC permanent marker. It only lasts about 2 or 3 seasons though.  Ken

Ed, I have tried both paint and Sharpie "Permanent" Markers.  Both will hold up for a half dozen trips or so, but the sun and salt water will take a toll on both.  If my memory serves me right (which it rarely does), the paint starts to flake off/fade right away.  I use Sharpie and just keep re-marking as needed.

Try some laminate over the sharpie. I've never tried it. So, I don't know how it would work. I'm just throwing that idea out there. Good luck with it ED.

Minwax sells a spray urethane that I imagine would extend the life of the Sharpie numbers.
