does anyone know how many peelers i can load into my 4x8 tank thats about 6 inches of water in it before i have problems due to load? By that i mean problems getting them to shed.

We usually put about 500 to 600 until we start running out of room. During peak of the season, if needed we put five to six full bushels in each tank..............well over 1,000 per tank. As long as they're all culled the same and you pick out busters for a day or two, you'll be alright.


This is not on a closed/recirculating system though.

Yeah, I'm not sure about with that size system. We have a closed system that we run a few tanks on in the summer to keep the water cooler but it's a couple thousand gallons.

A closed system like that with 150 gallons in it 4'x8' tank maybe 250 crabs.  Closed systems get dirty quickly.  Good idea to run your closed system through a lower container with oyster shells in it.  We made a cloth on the intake of the container out of that green mesh hog hair 3/4" cloth.  It acts as a filter to remove the waste.  It helps out a lot.  If you make something like that, make it so you can remove it and spray it off to clean it.  Hope that helps.  Good luck.

A closed system with 150 gallons in a 4'x8' tank may hold up to 250 crabs. Closed systems rapidly get filthy. Running your closed system via a lower container with oyster shells in it is a good idea; we prepared a cloth for the container's input.

4'x8' with 6" deep water would be about 120 gallons

4'x8' with 7 1/2" deep water would be about 150 gallons

My tanks were a little smaller than that and it held 250 crabs with no problem.  My filtration system was the same size as my tank.  I had oyster and clam shells as a filtration system.  Biggest thing that you have to do is wash/rinse your crabs before you put them into the tank.  This makes a big difference .  Big difference.  Can't stress enough.
