It's not always the size that counts

I will start by saying I have always been a freezer first hunter.  Granted, if a large buck and a small buck come walking by, I will gladly shoot the bigger of the two, but for me the first legal deer to come by will do just fine.

Having said all that, I only saw one deer the morning of opening day last week, and thankfully, he was legal.  Not by much, but he made it (they need three points on one side at least 1" long each).

If you couldn't tell from some of my other posts, hunting is a big family event for my family.  I will take a picture like this with a little buck any day.  My grand father is 92 years old, and this is the first year that he decided not to head out to the woods.  He has thus far lived an amazing life, and I am blessed to have known him as long as I have, and that my kids also have the chance to know him as well.

Still trying to get my dad his first of the season, and get a buck or another doe for my oldest son.

Good luck to everyone.

Great story.....It's all about family and traditions.

Awesome job.

Good stuff! When I was little, my father and three other guys had a cabin on the Virginia/West Virginia line. They used to hunt both States and it was always an exciting time waiting for him to come home to see if he got something. This was WWWAAAYYY before cellphones!

Nice job. I'm taking my cousin hunting tomorrow and he started hunting like 3 years ago and only has time to hunt 1 or 2 times a year. I told him he can shoot what ever he wants since he has not shot anything yet. His kids love the deer jerky I make for them every year.
