Hilarious story Crabnut. Your Granddaughter dropped the mic on those crab pickin wanna bee's.
I always crack those legs after the steam to check the sweetness after the cook is done. So fresh and so good.

My son in law is from NC. Never had eaten steamed crabs till my daughter brought him up last summer. Nice guy and he wanted to go crabbing last year. So I took him and my daughter out crabbing, everyone had a great time and we caught some crabs too. My wife showed him how to pick the crab and all went well. My daughter doesn't eat crabs, but knows how to pick them. She would do it for her grandmother often.
Well earlier this year, they came up and I caught some crabs for them. My son in law starts picking and eating the crabs. After about 3 crabs, my daughter busts him for doing a poor job picking out all the meat. She proceeds to repick the crab he had picked and accumulates a lot of missed meat.
I was quiet about it, she let him have it. I just smiled and laughed inside, knowing my daughter was a true crab picker taught well by her mother, LOL. I can't belittle folks who just started eating crabs a year earlier. He has until next year to get it right. By the way, he loves crabbing the TL.

Actually I think the best piece is located where the claw meets the body. That piece has a mixture of the mustard on it , which makes it taste real good.

I will eat the leg meat in large crabs but don't really bother on small ones. Its a dead give away when someone isn't good at picking when they sit down to eat crabs and doesn't use/need a knife

I only use a knife on the claws if the meat sticks to the shell. I pick crabs by cracking the body in half, then proceed to pick the bottom half . The meat normally comes out easy. That top half, I can apply pressure to most of that section and the meat squeezes out. If you been eating crabs forever, you don't need a knife for the body.

I don't use a knife and I'm pretty proficient. I'll pick a crab in roughly 6 minutes all while eating the leg and claw meat also.

I eat every part of the crabs. The leg meat comes out easy most of the time. Now if they are dry and hard to get out I will not mess with them as much. But when they are fresh I go threw the legs as well. Only takes a min and it's good tasting meat.

In south Louisiana, that is the perfect meat to add to the gumbo after it is done. Delicious

I run every bit of my crab shells and fish waste/bones/guts through my wood chipper right into my compost pile. Compost goes into the garden each spring. Crab shells are very good natural fertilizer.
That's gotta be one nice smellin woodchipper!! Guessin it definately lives outdoors all the time.
