Our annual New Years Day trip had to be postponed a bit due to freezing weather.  The temperature improved to the sixties today, so we ventured out.

Since the temperatures were still in the 20's on Wednesday, we were not expecting much.  We decided that catching one crab of any size would be a successful trip.  We got the lines out on a salt pond on Galveston Island just before 11 am.

After a 15 minute soak, we ran the line for the first time in 2018 and landed our first crab.  Not a keeper, but we were thrilled not to be skunked.  We ended up with a couple more undersized crabs on that run.

On the second run, we caught the first keeper of the year.  We ended the day with three keepers, five and a half to six inches.  I will say the six-inch crab was the smallest six-inch crab that I have ever seen.  On an up note, three different times we had two crabs on the line.  Only one was a keeper, but it does show promises.

I threw the crabs on the grill with some ribs that I was cooking and had a nice little snack.

These photos show BJFish with the first crab of the year.

At the end of the day, it's not about how many fish or crabs you put in the cooler but about how many memories you put in your life and the lives of your "mates".

Now you're going to make me take a trip down the river.  Still putting things away from my hunting trip but after that if I get board I'm outta here.  Lines are already baited so it won't take me much of a push to make the trip.

Thanks for posting any kind of crabbing or fishing report. The MD area is currently winterized, LOL.

You should have pitched a tent and stuck it out until you had a dozen.   Grin   Or were the Texans playing that day?   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

The Texans have been playing in the OR most of the season.  The backups for the injured backups have been getting injured.  However, if ya'll get past the Falcons, the Saints will be visiting.
