the web address redirects to https://bluecrab.usm.edu/ looks like they're tagging and releasing crabs all along the gulf coast from texas to florida. guessing it's a similar project to the one hat was done up in the chesapeake bay... cool catch!

One of the researchers running the study has posted several times here. This is the first post I have seen of a tagged crab that has caught. They will appreciate you contacting them.
Thanks

tag looks really clean so it seems logical that it was only in the water for 3 months.

Definitely spent no time in the Potapsco, that's for sure.

If I was in the Texas gulf this time of year I doubt I'd go very far either. But seriously, I guess just like in the Chesapeake, the female crabs go up the rivers into less salty water all summer then head back to the Gulf in the winter?

Staying alive and swimming for 3 months means either someone caught her and released it or that crab was lucky. The crab I caught tagged had been released that same week. The number on the tag could be how many had been released so far , including that crab.

this is one of 4 we caught in north florida in the end of sept. i recorded the time and gps co-ordinates and released the crabs. figured it might give them a little more data if they were caught again. we were walking them up, not trapping. they send you some nice little crab magnets with the $5

The magnets are interesting and the number on the tag is how many crabs have been tagged. That's what I was told when I questioned the person I called about catching the crab. Amazes me that they have the patience to tie that tag on the crab with wire. 13,429 crabs tagged like that so far for that study.
