Little Assawoman Delaware,Assawoman Bay Md

Mostly correct but the northern part of the big Assawoman that is behind Ocean City is Delaware and that is where I was crabbing.

Here is what I found in the book The Place Names of Maryland: their Origin and Meaning by Hamill Kenny: "Assawoman...The name is Indian and the two opening syllables (assa-) seem to be from either Algonquian acaw- 'across,' or Algonquian asaw- 'brown, yellow.' For technical reasons the rest of the word cannot be satisfactorily solved, and the full meaning of assawoman remains unknown...Note: The -woma(e)n of these names is a folk spelling on the analogy of English woman. Perhaps the -wom- of Assawoman is a cognate of Natick amaeu (amaei) 'He goes away' (p. 32)."  Hope this helps!

NOPE!!

Leemee get this straight there is no Assawoman Bay in Maryland ?
When was it moved into Delaware waters? When I was in my 20 s I
used to fish Assawoman Bay in Maryland.. But since it has been " MOVED "
I guess you are WRIGHT OR IS IT RIGHT ? I think that the vast part of
Assawoman Bay is still in Maryland, these young pups just don't know
what they are talking about. Huh Huh Huh

Let me correct this for you " The LITTLE ASSAWOMAN BAY " IS ENTIRELY IN DELAWARE "
Where as the " BIG ASSAWOMAN BAY IS FOR THE MOST PART IN MARYLAND " only about one eigth of the " BIG" ASSAWOMAN BAY IS IN DELAWARE > LOOK ON YOUR CHART AND YOU WILL SEE THAT YOU ARE " WRONG "

For those that care I will be going down to our DE house next week and do some crabbing in the Big Assawoman Bay Delaware section but my string of traps could on occasion cross into MD and it won't matter because in that area MD doesn't require a crabbing license and DE only requires a fishing license. When I come out of the canal where our house is I am only a few hundred yards from the state line. I hope to see woman's butts of various sizes on the boats going past.
