I learned today that 17 of NJ's 332 commercial crabbing licenses were not renewed for 2019, meaning the current slots 1-17 on the 2015 lottery list will be offered licenses via mail in the next couple of weeks.    The 17 licenses is the highest number of licenses to become available at a single time perhaps ever.

In 2015 I drew #41 in the 3000+ person lottery.   At that time, that number was given a 'puncher's chance' to see a license within my lifetime according to one NJ F&W official.    They gave out 10 licenses initially after the lottery, dropping me to #31.   Through attrition my number crept to #24 in 2016, #15 in 2017 and then finally to #2 in 2018.    So, I'll be one of the individuals being offered a license within the next few weeks.

NJ commercial crab licenses are hard to come by because you cannot sell or transfer them.   They can only be passed onto immediate family or not-renewed.   If you apply now, you get put at the bottom of the list.  After being on the 1993 list for so many years with no joy, then getting a favorable # in the 2015 lottery, I couldn't be happier.

2019 is going to be a new adventure for me....

How does that lottery work?  How many years are those 3,000 people working their way up the list?  How often do they start a new list?

1993 lottery list wasn’t reshuffled until 2015.   Who knows when they will hold another lottery.
