Thought about getting a few eel traps and catching some crab bait.  Do any of you do this? And what is the best time of the year to trap them?  Best bait?

For all the time and effort involved, I'd stick with CN's or Clams

Spring and fall is best for eels but there are enough around all the time to catch enough for some bait.  Use razor clams for bait.

There used to be a lot of them but those days are gone. Every eel you catch has never had the opportunity to spawn even once. They live in fresh and brackish water until they become breeding age adults then swim to the Saragaso   sea to spawn. Then they die and their elvers swim back to fresh and brackish water until they become breeding age adults repeating the cycle . They are history from over exploitation.
