Caught this girl Sat. in one of my pots.  Thought it looked cool so I took a picture.  After eating it I began to think it might not be a blue crab.  It tasted sweeter than the rest.  Take a look and tell me what y'all think.  I've sent the pic. to our crab biologist took look at to.

It doesn't look like anything I've ever caught. What's up with it's right claw? It's hard to see in the picture is it normal or deformed?

Hmm yeah it don't look like any crab that I've seen in MD. They do get to be some funky [arse] colors though depending on the weather and such. I caught one this summer that was part albino.

Just found out it is Callinectes bocourti, common name Bocourt swimming crab.  They are native to Jamaica and Brazil.  But have been seen in the gulf and Atlantic.

Wonder if it was the last hurricane that came up from the southwest that brought him to your doorstep?

No they pop up from time to time but not often.  I probably will not see one again so I feel a little guilty.  But it was a crab what else could I've done with it, but eat it.

HEy RD, did you check this out?  You catch any of these over St Marks?.
Maybe should move the topic to "other crabs" since it's something different...
Crabs from down in the Atlantic and coastal bays look a little more that shaped carapace up here but don't have that purplish mudder look of that one... interesting...
Perty cool that you said it was tasty... bring em on!  laugh

Did you notice if this was a male or female crab? This looks a lot like a female Samoan/Mangrove crab that we have back in Hawaii. I've run across a couple in Galveston...so I'm pretty sure they are in the general area. They are supposed to have sweeter meat than most other crabs.
