Loooooooong wait ahead

Just found out that my Dad and I will be heading out to Colorado for an elk hunt next Oct/Nov. I am wondering what advice any elk hunters have to offer. We will be hunting on private land, and the one guy that we are traveling with has done some guide work there the past few years.
I've got the gun covered, but any other gear advice would also be welcomed. Don't really have the room for a shoulder mount, so I was thinking of a skull mount, and possibly tanning the hide. Any thoughts or experiences would be great to hear too.

get in the best shape you can be in by then. I personally have never done a hunt out there but have friends that have and they all say they wished they were in better shape. It was a lot of walking/hiking and high elevations made it even more difficult

I’ll second that. Don’t wait til a week before. Walk hike add weight to a back pack and get used to carrying extra weight. Practice practice practice with the gun you’ll be shooting. Shoot in full gear that you’ll hunt with. Practice shooting low light conditions at different ranges. Good binoculars. Good boots. Don’t want to ruin a great opportunity for lack of preparation. Good luck and take lots of pictures

Each one of us here today will at one time in our lives look upon a loved one who is in need and ask the same question: We are willing to help, Lord, but what, if anything, is needed? For it is true we can seldom help those closest to us. Either we don't know what part of ourselves to give or, more often than not, the part we have to give is not wanted. And so it is those we live with and should know who elude us. But we can still love them - we can love completely without complete understanding.

A lot of what you need to do is going to be determined by where you're hunting. You said you're going to hunt private land and the guy has worked/hunted there. If he is familiar with exactly where you're going, he can fill you in on whether you're going to have to do a lot of hiking, climbing, etc.. A lot of people get altitude sickness, it never bothered me and it was a couple of years after I had heart bypass surgery. Probably be a different story now!
A lot of the success out there depends on where you got the permit. Look up the Colorado game dept.on the internet, they have tons of info including the success rates for all of the units and what was killed and when.

Well the time as come, and we are on the road. We should get to Colorado tomorrow evening, and head to the camp on Saturday morning. Doubt I'll be able to update from the field, but hopefully I have some good news and pictures when I can get a signal.
