It's called a Troutline , especially on the ES. They won't know what you're talking about if you say Trotline. They'll think you're talking about a line you want a trotter horse to follow down the track. The guys that were not brought up proper around crabbers call them trotlines.

I can see you've never spent much time on the ES.

A couple of years ago I asked on Facebook if trotlines were legal here in Florida. One of the answers I got was "Down here they are called handlines". I said "nevermind" and moved on....

It's called a trotline in DNR regs, and that is what I go by. Since a troutline is not listed under allowable gear to use, then setting troutlines for crabbing is probably illegal. I would suggest calling it by it's actual name, trotline, if boarded by DNR. Or you will probably get that same look, as shown in Ray's & Russ's posts above.

Most of the ES crabbers don't have time to post. They're too busy catching crabs for a living from April until December. They don't care what the DNR or anyone on the western shore calls it. In the winter they catch Arsters not oysters.

What you're hearing is the lower eastern shore dialect. When they say the letter "O" it sounds like a mixture of "O", "A", and "U". They're saying trotline, just sounds different.

I just scanned the book "Beautiful Swimmers" and the author of the book spells it as "trotline". The first mention of it is in the Introduction on page XV

I've seen anybody catch 1 trout on a trotline. Plenty of crabs, but no trout.
