Interesting !  Not that it will do me any good since I gave up
Crabbing & Fishing because of health issues, however I did not
give up eating them rascals though my taster is still working 100% .
When I was crabbing though I did not keep Females they went
back in the water.

Nothing tastes quite like a Chessy Crab the very best on this earth IMHO .

Female crabs taste fine. And if legal in Maryland, I would keep them.

This past season I dumped many females bushels back into the bay based upon my male catch.   I can legally take many female bushels as a comm.  I paused this year, something caught my attention that I was never sensitive to in the past.  When I ripped the backs off of live females, it was a noticeably different based upon female crab anatomy that are not present in male crabs.  In an instant I thought to myself,  I won't harvest females much longer, if ever again.  I've grown a lot softer over the years.  They are tasty, but, I have a soft spot for women and children.   Smiley

as a comm I keep sooks when I get orders for them and will continue to do so, I also keep some for picking in the fall. the smithonean sounds spot on with their advice and I like the way they give the facts without a spin. The CBF would have said things much differently and called for more regs i'm sure.

RICK

I guess that I should have been a little more accurate with my statement. Back in the day when a rec could keep females ( LATE 70s early 80s ) I did in fact keep huge females in the fall of the year, but it was legal to keep them then. I always found that big Jimmy Crabs are far more tasty than the females. Would I buy Female Crabs now ? Yes I would, If Female Crabs were legal to keep by recs would I keep them ? Only in the fall of the year, and then only a few, not a bushel of them. Don't kill the Goose that is laying the Golden eggs.

If LCC's drop because full timers need a bigger license, that means weekend warrior recs will be able to pick up a license cheap.  I thought they were trying to eliminate part timers, not make more of them?

Lol it would never happen as far as male bushel limits for Comm. That’s funny right there and merely your “opinion”

Never happen? You don't know much. DNR has been discussing this for years and just trying to get the science to support it.
They've already allocated individual daily quotas for fish, oysters, and clams. Why wouldnt they do it crabs.
Look at the quota disparities between an LCC and TFL for sooks... That will give you an idea how the limits will shake out.

You said Ray.  Cheap or not, anything can be bought.  If the worry is LCC restrictions on female harvest, just purchase a TFL or CBx.  If you're out of state, just buy an out-of-state transfer and pay the annual fees.  In the past I would take my limit on females.  But they don't bring me much return regardless of orders.  I think I'm just chucking them back in 2020.

All licensing and regulations are [bull dung], when crabs are in the water naturally, and not owned by any state or entity. Jesus and Peter didn't need a license to fish in 30 A.D., why the [Sam Hill] should I?

It's a good point Rick.  I can only see DNR's face when you attempt to explain this point to them.  That's why straight jackets were made.  Everything costs $$$.

REALLY?Huh

Would you want every jackpot selling himself as a sheet rock specialist?

There has to be regulation or the breed would have been decimated many years ago.  In fact, in my opinion, the fees for a rec lic needs to be increased.  My license went up 800% a few years back while my costs increased also but the price of the product has either stayed the same or decreased in some years.  Meanwhile a rec can crab 6 days a week catching a bushel a day for $5/$10 a year and for the meniscal fee it has been proven that some recs do sell their catch

If you don't believe me about being decimated, do a little research on the "Oyster Wars of the Chesapeake Bay"

I agree 100% with you on increasing the Rec price. And your right, you see recs selling crabs all over on FB

You are wasting your time with someone who only wants to " FILL HIS BASKETS "  no matter what ! Just read his posts this is all that he wants " FULL BASKETS "  ! Male crabs or Female Crabs it makes no difference to him " JUST FILL THEM BASKETS " . You should be thankful that all recs are not like he is a few dozen crabs is alright with me as long as I have some crabs to eat, I do not need two bushels of crabs every time that I go crabbing like some recs do. Save some for another day !     " HOW MANY IS ENOUGH ? "

It's ok Bob

Sometimes you have to put your opinion out there and it may hit home to someone.  Smiley

I never had a clue about the Oyster Wars until about 10 or so years ago.  I found it very interesting with the turn of events and how the northern states wiped out the oyster stock and then came to the Chesapeake Bay and started pillaging our bay.  Do a research on Oyster war of the Chesapeake or the oyster pirates of the Chesapeake.
