I just bought a dozen crabs from the Lewes Fishouse in Lewes, DE. They said the crabs are coming from the Choptank river. I always thought the Maryland crabbing season began on the 1st of April?

Most likely Lewis Fishouse bought them from a wholesaler from Dorchester County who had crabs shipped in.  Either they did not know any better, or stretching the truth.

I had a guy one time that told me the crabs  came from West Virginia . That's why they were small?
