Going on Vacation 1st week in May. Spences Creek.  Hopefully someone on here can give us some info. Will crabs be running that far up the river that early in the season? With 20 circle traps do we need a license for either on the pier or on our boat? Thank you.

There will be crabs around but how big and how many is the question.  I started catching them in April(Yecomico) but mainly females.  As for a license I am not sure you need one since topless/circle traps are considered handlines in Va.  If anything, probably a fishing license will be what you need.

You do not need any type of license in VA for topless traps.  They are considered hand lines down here.  You can fish as many as you want 7/24/365.  Cool

PS: I am directly across the Bay from there.  I start crabbing on opening day which is in March.
