My daughter had to return to working in her office so I've had my soon to be 8-year-old granddaughter this week.  Today, I decided that it was about time that I introduced her to crabbing, so I grabbed some chicken necks and hand lines.  I took her to Highland Bayou Park in LaMarque, not because it was the best place to catch crabs using handlines but because it was the safest place for me to take her.

We put out four lines in the bayou itself.  Emma needs to work on getting more distance when throwing the lines in but at least she doesn't stand on the line anymore.  She would pull the line and I scooped.  We were catching crabs on about every other line.  Most of the crabs would have been legal in New Jersey but not in Texas.

We put two more lines out in an adjacent pond and started catching almost keepers.  Two of them must have been 4 15/16th of an inch.

Emma finally got tired of pulling lines so I went to retrieve them.  I finally caught a 5 1/2 crab and we had a keeper.  Her mom had told Emma the best part of crabbing when she was a kid is that you got to eat what you caught, so the question is: How much Zataeran's Complete Crab Boil to you use for one crab?

Sounds like you now have a crabbing partner.  Great job Grandpa.

Before Grandpa passed he  figured out 1 tablespoon per crab. He would boil 1 or 2 crabs a day and by the end of the week have enough for a good crab cocktail.
