Legality I don’t know. Just not sure it would work out so well. Seems a little fast on the retrieve and would shake the crabs off. Just my opinion though. Seems overkill

I understand it could be overkill. I plan on pulling a good number of hand lines from my kayak. I am thinking about using an old cordless drill which I can easily add a speed control to slow down the retrieval. I enjoy tinkering, I am a McGyver of sorts  Grin

Where is the line drawn between "primarily by hand" and use of a  "mechanical device" like referenced in C. Commercial Gear. #6 "Hand Scrape"?

I'd call DNR and ask.  Since you're on a kayak though, wouldn't you need a crabbing license?  And if have said license, then you can probably pull those lines in any way you want?

I agree about the DNR. If anything I’d wait to get “caught”. Firstly, I don’t think the DNR would know what to think and secondly, he’s not gonna take you to jail or give you a $500 fine. And yes they probably wony care.

I'm not altogether certain I'd want to try to manage several "loose" LiPo batteries (i'm pretty sure you'd need spares) in a saltwater environment in a yak...

I don't know about the drill idea.  Pulling in a hand line is all about "feel".  Lotta times I start pulling, I feel the crab let go, I hold the line still for a few seconds and I can feel him jump back on.  Ya can't do that with a drill.  I'm sure you can catch a few but you'd probably lose just as many.
