Speaking of crabs,  Aren't the crabs we catch "blue claw crabs"?  Isn't the blue crab (like the ones they catch in Australia) a different species?

Isn't calling blue crabs  "blue claw crabs"  about the same as calling a trotline roller by some other stupid name like a "propstick"?

I did a little research and here's what I found:

In the south pacific ocean, like Australia for instance they have a blue swimmer crab. 


Here in the US, we have the blue claw. 

The two look similar, but are different.

Our crab is known as the "Atlantic Blue Crab". Its scientific name is Callinectes sapidus (calli is Greek for "beautiful", nectes is "swimmer", and sapidus is Latin for "savory").

Sorry to say that "blue claw" is not the official name (only the males have blue claws, females have red-tipped claws).

So there you have it. It's the Altantic Blue Crab, or Blue Crab for short.
