Well well.. I wasn't sure what I was going to find out there. End of the season check in on the cottage. (aka, excuse to go crabbing for the weekend)
prior to this year I haven't done much tracking, so I really have no idea how late in to the year I can expect to see 'em. (I'll post all the numbers In October)
Both days used 1 open box trap and 2-3 bait lines.
Definitely seeing a decrease in the activity, and size. Didn't put eyes on any that broke 6" most of them were right around 5" so I ended up tossing many back.
Seagulls were certainly not slowing down though... they were picking off the crabs that weren't moving too quickly and idling out in the shallows. So I wasn't competing against other crabbers, but rather the Seagulls!!
High tide, going out, clear, sunny on both days, but wicked windy the whole weekend making it hard to see.
I found that my spot tends to be a lot better when tide is coming in - the tide wasn't working right with my sleeping schedule (I just didn't feel like waking up around 7am to get out there a couple of hours after low tide)
Saturday:
4 hours - 12 keepers observed a lot more females showing up now.
Sunday:
3.5 hrs - 12 keepers Approx 50/50 split of M to F. (kept a couple of large females - was torn on this, since I didn't keep a single one yet to this point in the season - I actually double checked the MA regs to make sure I could keep I was so torn on it)
I'm heading down at least one more time the last weekend of Sept. I'll at least put in a few hours to see if anything is still around... but I'm not expecting much
