Chicken Necking question
«
on:
April 05, 2021, 08:37:53 AM »
Going to try a little hand lining tomorrow in the ICW behind Oak Island.
Debating on buying my Recreational gear license this year $70.00 or just using folding traps or rings.
Two years ago my 5 traps were stolen so if I decide to buy license I will have to buy new gear.
Thinking about buying 5-10 folders put them out in a line 1/8 mile apart then go back to first one and repeat
What do y’all think?

It is a darn shame that you lost your traps to a thief but it
don't matter where you go in this country you will never be
in short supply of scum like this, I am sorry for your loss.
I like the advise that was given to you, keep your gear in
Plain sight !
Good luck out there and full baskets and tight lines to you .

I haven't been on here in long time so sorry for lateness catching up. Question, why put the traps so far apart? Even as a commercial crabber we don't do that. However that said, I could understand if you were trying different depths

Crab Trap Spacing

Horsefly,
What would be a good distance?
Semi related as a recreational crabber in the currituck sound on vacation each year with a RCGL, how far should i stay away from commercial pots. Keeping in mind this is a hobby and not my source of income do not want to be that tourist! 8-0
And agree with the other poster it stinks to have your pots stolen. Knock on wood never had mine stolen crabbing in NC. Have had them pulled and tampered with but thankfully they were still there. Replacing 5 pots gets expensive real quick.
Appreciate your insights.
Best,
Greg

I would space them about 20 yards apart and generally stay least 5 yards away if you can from commercial gear unless he or she has already come and gone. Some people straight line pull pots others circle and go. It's the ones that circle that need that extra room.
Appreciate your insights.
Best,
Greg
